Monthly Round-up: November 2021

In Case You Missed it: Success in Akihabara  / The Goliath and Peace & Quiet / A Rare Gaming Sesh November Playlist I've spent the bulk of November playing and enjoying Forza Horizon 5 . You can read all about that in the last two links above.  I also dipped my toe in the Halo Infinite multiplayer. It's good but it hasn't really grabbed me, but then it has been several years since an online FPS did. However, it has definitely increased my interest in the single player campaign next month, so job done. I finally got around to Jedi: Fallen Order earlier in November. I really should've played that much sooner. The first hour feels a lot like Uncharted in space, though it isn't able to maintain that level of quality throughout. I loved the characters, and although I never felt I'd completely gotten the hang of the combat, it was certainly satisfying. It's far from perfect, with overly long chapters, unrewarding exploration, and huge gaps between narrative ...

In Case You Missed it: FFIX and Nodding Off / Blur - Why Not Play Something New? / Long-term  Resident October Playlist I really enjoyed  Resident Evil Village. It's far more consistent than RE7 and does a decent job of harkening back to previous Evils whilst continuing, and improving upon, the series reimagining. And it was a steal at that 6-months-after-launch nice-price. I did more detailed words, and a picture, on Village the week before last. The link's above. I wasn't going to buy Deathloop , but then I did. Mainly because I found a copy at a silly price, but also because it has certain qualities that appeal. I'd been imagining it as a kinda-successor to TimeSplitters, what with the time manipulation and slightly exaggerated art style. It's not TimeSplitters, obviously, but it is rather good. It took me a little while to get to grips with the ins and outs of the looping story, and how I'm supposed to manipulate it, but once that clicked I really got int...

In Case You Missed It : Bloodborne - Good & Bad Nights / Blue Skies & False Nostalgia / Squid & Demos May Playlist 1. Yakuza 0: I'm about twenty hours into the latest Yakuza, a prequel set in the 1980s, but I'm not sure if I'm going to finish it. It pains me to say this, but I haven't entirely enjoyed my time with bubble-era Kazuma and Majima. Don't get me wrong, Zero definitely has its moments, but overall it is falling a little short. The narrative and supporting characters just aren't as interesting as I had expected. The cut scenes feel longer, though they probably aren't, and I'm skipping through dialogue that I'd usually at least make an attempt to understand. I've also found the combat to be frustratingly unbalanced - I struggle my way through Kazuma's encounters but hardly break a sweat as Majima. Every now and again, something wonderfully Yakuza happens and I'm reminded why I love this serie...

Monthly Round-up: April 2015

In Case You Missed It: Finding Fault with Bloodborne / Tuned Out / Guitars & Wiimotes / Buy My DLC My new NBA blog:  Holding Court April Playlist 1. Bloodborne: April was all about Bloodborne, fifty one hours of it to be exact. I exhausted every area and boss, with the exception of the Chalice Dungeons which I thought were dull in comparison to the rest of the game. I got the squid baby ending and even tried a bit of NG+, just enough to convince myself that I'm not up for a second playthrough just yet. A week removed from my final visit to Yharnam, and I’m still thinking about Bloodborne and all the things it did so well. 2. Valiant Hearts: Valiant Hearts makes great use of an otherwise underutilised setting - World War One. The art style is beautiful and it softens some of the more unpleasant scenes without lessening their impact. VH does a good job of highlighting the history within its fiction, and I enjoyed learning a little about the settings ...

Monthly Round-up: March 2015

In Case You Missed It: Accumulating Games / Bionic Arms & Plastic Statues / War Has Changed? / Back on the Hunt March Playlist 1. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: It gets better with each passing hour. 2. Bloodborne: It's been far too long since I was excited about an original, PS4 game. I'm only an hour in, so I'll save my impressions for another time. 3. Odds & Ends: Rogue Legacy is not for me and I'm starting to tire of retro-style graphics on current gen systems. OlliOlli 2 is much like the first game, which is great, and 3D Out Run looks and plays beautifully on the New 3DS. Words: Uncharted 4, Re-masters and VR Between Uncharted 4's postponement and Hideo Kojima's exit from Konami, it's been a rough month. I've already written about Kojima and the end of Metal Gear Solid, so I'll refrain from upsetting myself further. Uncharted 4 being pushed back to 2016 was both a surprise and a disappointment, as the PS4...

In Case You Missed It: Back to Blogging / Revisiting the Mansion (RE1 HD) / In Praise of Yakuza / The Correct Length February Playlist 1. Resident Evil Remake HD:   I’d forgotten just how good the first Resident Evil was. I’m gradually making my way through Jill’s campaign, having finished with Chris’ earlier in the month - I achieved the best ending where Jill and Rebecca fall asleep in a helicopter. I will do everything in my power to ensure that Barry also has the chance to nod off in a chopper. 2. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate:   I’ve only played a measly five hours, as of late I have been struggling to go more than fifteen minutes without falling asleep and dropping the 3DS on my face. Still, I’m sure that I’ll be playing this for months to come. Words: New 3DS XL, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Dragon Age Inquisition This month I bought my third 3DS, because I like new things. I marked the release of one of my most anticipated games of 2015, Monst...
