Taking Requests for Tokyo Game Show

I will be attending Tokyo Game Show next week, on the 15th and 16th of September. This will be my sixth consecutive TGS, and third since first securing a press pass and saving myself from the sweaty crush of the public days.

I have some obligations to fulfil for other websites, but I'll still have plenty of time to run exhaustive coverage here at toomanywires. This brings me to my point: I'd love to take some reader requests so that I can bring you the coverage you want. Let me know in the comments of any games or hardware you want me to check out and I'll do my best to make it happen, otherwise you'll just get a shit-ton of blogs about gaming t-shirts, how many beers I just drank or the rancidity of the katsu curry being served in the food hall! Besides the comments section, I can also be contacted at toomanywires (at) hotmail (dot) com.

I'm hoping to rent a phone for the duration of the trip, so you should be able follow my coverage live, via Twitter. If you haven't already, then be sure to follow @toomanywiresUK for plenty of gaming gibberish.

I'll be heading out to Tokyo in a few days and won't be returning until the end of the month. I'm really looking forward to this trip back to my old stomping grounds and I hope to share as much of it as possible here at toomanywires. I'll be throwing my regular posting routine to the wind, but there will be no shortage of content throughout September - mostly related to TGS and Japan. I'll be kicking things off shortly with a TGS'10 retrospective and a preview for this year's show.

Don't miss this opportunity to tailor my TGS coverage and read about the things you are really interested in.

Cheers

Matt

Odds & Ends

1. Dragon Quest X
Dragon Quest X Online? Really? With the exception of Monster Hunter, Japan hasn't been receptive to online, console gaming. It will be very interesting to see how the Japanese market reacts to its most beloved franchise going a bit MMORPG. Multiplayer connectivity on the DS is one thing (DQIX), as Japan has been more receptive to shared experiences on portables, but I'm envisioning quite a backlash with DQX. A well loved JRPG moving online is risky business - just look at Final Fantasy - and the fact that DQX is going to be on the Wii makes me even more sceptical. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

2. Pre-orders Complete
I don't pre-order games very often. When I do, it'll be down to financial incentives or because its a game that I have a strong desire to play from day one. I despise the current trend of retail specific pre-order bonuses and know that most games will be in the £18-25 bracket within two months, so I'm usually happy to wait it out.

Up until last month, I had pre-ordered only two games in 2011: Dragon Age 2 and LA Noire, both of which were disappointments. However, over the last few weeks I have made four, final pre-orders which will see me into 2012. I always intended to get Uncharted 3 on day one, and I got pretty good savings on Resistance 3 and Batman Arkham City - two games I very much want to play but otherwise would've been happy to wait a couple of weeks for. Child of Eden (PS3) is the fourth, thanks to its ridiculously low price here in the UK (£14.99) and a free t-shirt which I'll never wear. There are plenty of other games that I'll be picking up before the end of the year - ICO Collection, MGS HD Collection, Modern Warfare 3, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Skyrim (maybe) - but I'm definitely done with pre-orders for now.

Comments

  1. I want to hear about the Vita. Any game impressions for it will do. Of course, try to include Uncharted: Golden Abyss, maybe Gravity Daze, LBP, Resistance and whatever else looks interesting.

Maybe Ninja Gaiden 3 and DmC if they are playable (has it been mentioned if they are). Not sure what else. If I think of something I will bug you about it later. Well, have fun! I really hope to go to one of these big game shows one day.

  2. I read somewhere that Sony have confirmed that 18 previously unannounced Vita games will be on show. I'll be sure to check some of them out!

Will definitely keep an eye out for those games. Particularly interested in the DmC reboot, despite not being a huge fan of the series.

    Cheers for stopping-by

  3. I just want to know what they're doing with Monster Hunter. I haven't heard anyone confirm any MH on Vita or 3DS. Someone needs to say something!

I traded in my copy of Child of Eden the other day. I kind of wish I'd just watched an HD youtube of it, since it's essentially just a tech demo for Kinect. Its only real good point is that it's pretty. The gameplay is almost nonexistent by 2011 standards - it's 1979's Tailgunner with nicer graphics.

  4. It wouldn't be TGS without some sort of Monster Hunter. I'll keep my eyes peeled.

I'll be happy to play Child of Eden with my regular controller, Rez style. Not sure if motion controls really add much. At £14.99 ($24) it would have to be pretty bad to disappoint.

  5. Already put in my requests at 1up, but I thought I'd do it here too Matt!
Mainly I just want to know if there are talks to bring Onechanbara Z Kagura to the west. For those not in the know Onechanbara is a low budget B-movie hack n slash series in which two sexy sisters dispose of a bunch of zombies.

Yet what makes Onechanbara Z Kagura stand out in the trailer are the new characters, more interesting enemies, and better modeling. Aka I think D3 has really stepped it up. Not only that, but they could perhaps ride the potential "hype train" which Lollipop Chainsaw will get going. Aka perhaps us yanks are finally starting to drop the prude act a bit. lol.

Regardless, I understand my love of hack n slashers isn't shared by everyone and I don't expect you to go out of your way if other things come up.

  6. Hey. Cheers for stopping-by.

Onechanbara Z Kagura is now on my list - if its there then I will take it for a spin. Might even get something new on Lollipop Chainsaw too.
